    Description

    BARNES'
    HAWAIIAN GEOGRAPHY
    A.S. BARNES & CO
    NEW YORK AND CHICAGO
Hardbound in very good condition, 26 pages that feature 5 maps and numerous pictures, measures 8 3/4" x 9 1/2".  No dust jacket, no record of one having been issued.
The boards are covered in green cloth with decorations in red and black, title and some areas blind stamped along with an insignia-type stamp on the rear board.  They are basically clean with a small orange circular blemish, mid-level on the front board near the leading edge.  Slight traces of likely, paper remain adhering along these vertical board edges, more so on the rare board.  Bumps and wear is noted to the edges with a couple very small worn through spots at the tail of the spine.  There is no fraying however, or fabric loss.
The contents are age toned with end papers that have a brushed tan appearance.  The fly page and final page have an added piece of tissue type repair holding them in place but not connecting to the interior pages that might cause damage to contents.  Handling soil/foxing is noted mostly toward the lower free page corners, but no significant marking, tears or chips are noted.  In that this book was originally compiled and published for 5th grade students, the handling would indicate that it was indeed utilized.
Of Note:  The book has no dedicated title page.  Publisher information is presented on the cover with the first page of the book being "THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS" pictorial page.
Book is featured in HAWAIIAN NATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY, 1780-1900, Volume 4, 1881-1900, Compiled and Annotated by David W. Forbes, University of Hawai'i Press, Honolulu, in Association with Hordern House Sydney, Page 308, Ref. 4063.  (Page is presented for your review.)  The information presented in this reference along with the only reference on the www to another copy of this book actually being in existence (sold at sometime in the past) seems to confirm it being the complete publication, no pages missing.
Although it contains no printing date, none of the 1890 census information is included, King Kalakaua still listed as "reigning," therefore this is felt to be one of those printed during the 1880s, prior to his passing.
Currently, there are several references on the www, but I find no location of others in existence, even in university or archival libraries.  I have never seen one before over a period of some 20 years of involvement.    Truly this copy of BARNES' HAWAIIAN GEOGRAPHY is a rare piece, one that would be a treasure to include in a Pacific Island collection.
